The Magnitogorsk State Conservatoire

The Magnitogorsk State Conservatoire celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2003. It was founded on the base of the junior musical college on the initiative of Alexander Yakupov, the first rector of the Conservatoire, Doctor of Arts, Honoured Worker of Culture of Russian Federation. The Conservatory is a unique institution of musical education due to its multilevel, multiprofessional and international status. Both native and foreign students and teachers feel comfortable here. There are two faculties at the ?onservatoire:
- Faculty of Music Education and Performing Arts
- Faculty of Acting and Choreography.

Faculty of Music Education and Performing Arts prepares specialists of high qualification for teaching and performing music. They are taught to play a great variety of instruments: piano, string instruments (violin, cello, viola, doublebass), wind instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone, horn, French horn, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon), Russian folk instruments (accordion, button accordion, harmonica, domra, balalaika, guitar) and percussive instruments. There are also other specialties such as "teacher of music theory", "teacher of music history", "choir conducting", solo and classical vocal, pop-music instrumental and vocal.

Faculty of Acting and Choreography prepares drama and movie actors, puppet theatre actors, ballet - masters, managers of dance collectives and dance teachers. The teachers and the students have three Concert Halls in the Conservatoire for their practice, as well as numerous performance stages in the city and its neighbourhood at their disposal.

The Conservatoire is unique in the sense that it consists of five levels of musical education, starting with the kindergarten "Notka" (Little Note) and up to the post-graduate department. The lower levels of the educational process (kindergarten, lyceum, junior college) give the opportunity to acquire primary musical knowledge and skills. The base of mastership is being laid here, which then helps to study at the higher level of education in the College and Conservatory, i.e. to perfect abilities and improve skills, to extend knowledge and mastership and artistry. The educational process at the Conservatoire is conducted by highly qualified educational staff. Outstanding professionals from different parts of the world teach here. The staff includes 12 doctors/professors, 23 teachers have a scientific degree of the candidate of arts (PhD in Arts) and 30 teachers have a scientific title of docents. Teachers have honorable degrees. 20 creative collectives (orchestras, choirs, ensembles) work at the Conservatoire. And their number increases every year.

The fifth level of education in the Conservatoire is the post-graduate department. In collaboration with the leading specialists in musical arts the dissertation council was formed at the Conservatory. Since that time 37 specialists have graduated here, among them - 16 are the teachers from the Magnitogorsk Conservatoire (they belong to the teaching staff of the Conservatoire).

The leadership the Conservatoire sees as one of their main tasks to increase the pedagogical and performing skills of the teaching staff of the Conservatory and of the school music teachers. To support this vision local, regional and international conferences, assemblies, seminars, festivals and contests are held here every year. Outstanding musicians and specialists of arts from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk etc.-the authors of fundamental works on musicology conduct lectures and hold seminars and master classes before the listeners. Annual scientific conferences of students take place in the Conservatoire - the fact that testifies to a high level of scientific aspirations of the students. The results of the research work are issued by the publishing department of the Conservatoire. With their help, five great monographs, many textbooks and journals have been published for the years since the Conservatoire has been established. The concert activities of the Conservatoire's teachers and students embrace a wide range of concert halls starting with school stages, workshops, the Magnitogorsk municipal Opera House, Ordgenikidze Palace, Drama Theatre, Puppet and Actor Theatre in Magnitogorsk, the Organ Hall in Chelyabinsk, concert tours nationwide and abroad (Egypt, the USA), contests in Italy, France, Germany, Poland etc. Two outstanding musical events crowned the Conservatoire's activities: the Concert in the Hall of Church Councils in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Moscow, March 2002) and participation in the Festival of Russian Culture (France, September 2002). 14 performing teachers are awarded the title "Honored artist of Russian Federation", 3 teachers have received the title "Honored Worker in the Field of Arts of Russian Federation". 11 teachers are prize winners of national and international contests.
