At Magnitogorsk State Conservatory, named after M. I. Glinka there is The Joint council D 999.146.03 on the Presentation of theses in obtaining the Scientific Degree of the Doctor of Arts and the Ph.D. in Art Studies on the scientific speciality 17.00.02 “Musical art”.

The Council is formed by Magnitogorsk State Conservatory (academy), named after M. I. Glinka, Ural State Mussorgsky Conservatoire and Ufa State Academy of Arts named after Zagir Ismagilov.

The Council is created for providing necessary conditions for the optimization in training the Academic Staff of musical art in the regions of the Urals and Western Siberia. The Council takes the presentation of theses regardless the place of their preparation and candidate’s establishment. 

Since the passed period (1997–2012) 87 dissertations, including 6 theses for a Doctor’s degree, have been defended in the council functioning at Magnitogorsk conservatory. Dissertation topics can be divided into eight directions:

  1. Questions on philosophy and aesthetics of music, problems of theoretical musicology;
  2. Problems of historical science of music;
  3. Questions on musical performing art (instrumental and vocal, including choral); problems of training musicians-performers;
  4. National musical folklore of the Urals and Siberia;
  5. Interaction of the musical cultures of the regions of Russia and foreign countries;
  6. Russian spiritual music;
  7. Problems of development of musical educational system;
  8. Peculiarities of developing musical culture and art in the regions of Russia (musical Regional studies).

The greatest number of theses is defended on the third direction (25 works), on the first direction (19 works) and on the second (12 works) one.

The geography of candidates, who have defended their dissertations at Magnitogorsk Dissertation Council, is vast: Magnitogorsk, Ufa, Ekaterinburg, Perm, Saratov, Orenburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Tumen, Moscow, St.Petrsburg, Tolyatti, Surgut, Sochi, Tula, and foreign countries – Great Britain, Vietnam.

From the history of the Dissertation Council activity

In 1997 at Magnitogorsk State Conservatory, named after M. I. Glinka, the university-complex of a new kind, combining three levels of the professional musical education (elementary, secondary and higher), the postgraduate course in the speciality 17.00.02 “Musical art”, the Specialized council K 092.23.01 on the presentation of theses in obtaining the Scientific Degree of the Ph.D. in Art Studies was formed. The council was head by A. N. Yakupov (the Chairman), the Rector of the conservatory, the Doctor of Arts, Full Professor; M. M. Berlyanchik, Vice-Rector for Research, the Doctor of Arts, Full Professor; G. F. Glazunova, the Scientific Secretary. The first staff of the Council was made up by E. B. Dolinskaya, V. Y. Grigoryev, E. G. Sorokina, the famous musicians, teachers of the leading higher education institutions; M. I. Imhanitsky, professor of Russian Academy of music; V. P. Kostarev, professor of Ural State Musorgsky Conservatory.

In December, 2000 as a result of successful recertification a new structure of the Council on the presentation of theses in obtaining the Scientific Degree of the Ph.D. in Art Studies K 210.008.01 was formed by the following scientists of Magnitogorsk conservatory: I. F. Galiguzov, S. A. Zakrzhevskaya, Doctors of Science; A. A. Glazunov, O. A. Yakupova, O. A. Urvantseva, the Ph.D. in Art Studies, L.V.Balanchivadze, the Ph.D. in Psychological Sciences; Y. G. Pisarenko, the Ph.D. in Pedagogical Sciences, O. V. Lesher and V. A. Belikov, representatives of other higher education institutions, Doctors of

Pedagogical Sciences.

The next reorganization of the Council took place in 2008, when the Joint Council on Doctor’s and Ph.D. presentation of a theses D 999.146.03 was formed on the decision of VAK Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. Besides the above-mentioned higher education institutions, M. and L. Rostropovich State Institute of Arts in Orenburg added the list of the Council founders. The term of authority of the Council was provided for the whole period of validity of the Nomenclature of scientists’ specialities, declared by the Ministry of Education and Science in 2009.

In 2012 according to the issue of new “Regulations of the Dissertation Council”, approved by the Government, a renewed Council was found.  It was established by three South Ural higher education institutions of music – Magnitogorsk conservatory, Ural conservatory and Ufa Academy of Arts. 19 persons joined the Council, among them there were the leading specialists of the universities-founders. A. G. Korobova, E. E. Polotskaya (Ural conservatory), N. F. Garipova, E. R. Simonova, the Doctors of Arts; I. G. Galyautdinov, the Doctor in Philological Sciences (Ufa Academy of Arts) became the new Council members.

Now the Council is headed by A. N. Yakupov (the Chairman), the D.A., Full Professor; M. M. Berlyanchik (the Vice-chairman), the D.A., Full Professor; E.V. Chernova (the Scientific Secretary), the Ph.D. in Art Studies, the Associate Professor.

The Joint Dissertation Council D 999.146.03 on the presentation of theses in obtaining the Scientific Degree of the Ph.D. in Art Studies and the Doctor of Arts in the speciality 17.00.02 “Musical Art” constantly collaborates with Ural higher education institutions, West Siberia higher educational institutions, and also with the institutions of other Russian regions.

The Council holds consultations on execution the Dissertation researches of postgraduates and candidates in obtaining academic degree.
